Part 3. Registration, Course Changes, and Withdrawal
§ 3-310 Guided Individual Study, and Extramural and Online Courses
(a) All Students (Guided Individual Study)
(1) Guided individual study courses are open to applicants who can meet the University entrance requirements. In addition, high school students (at least 15 years old) with grade point averages of at least 3.5 out of 4, may enroll in any entry-level undergraduate course listed in the Guided Individual Study Course Catalog with the permission of the guidance counselor at their high schools and with University approval. Qualified superior students, not enrolled in a high school, may also enroll in undergraduate guided individual study courses. To be eligible for enrollment, such students must demonstrate their proficiency, and their admission must be concurred in by the Head of Academic Outreach and by the departments in which the course or courses are to be taken. Proficiency can be demonstrated by, for example, previous completion of a related course at a Community College or a college level GIS course from another institution, appropriate score on an SAT or ACT test.
(2) No student is permitted to register in more than three guided individual study courses at one time.
(3) Students enrolled for courses on the Urbana-Champaign campus must obtain the approval of the dean of their college to enroll concurrently in guided individual study courses.
(4) Students who have been dropped from the University of Illinois for poor scholarship must obtain the approval of the dean of their college for submission of an application for admission to guided individual study work.
(5) Guided individual study courses, under certain conditions, may be taken on a credit-no credit basis. For regulations concerning the credit-no credit option, see §3-105.
(6) Enrollment
(A) Enrollment in guided individual study courses does not qualify a student for a student loan or an in-school deferment.
(b) All Students (Extramural and Online courses)
(1) Admission and total course requirements shall be the same as for guided individual study courses (subsections(a)(1) and (a)(3) above).
(2) Students who have been dropped from the University of Illinois for poor scholarship must obtain the recommendation of the dean of their college before completing registration in an extramural or online course.
(c) Undergraduate Students
Credit for guided individual study work taken from fully accredited institutions may be allowed toward a degree on approval of the dean of the student’s college.
(d) Graduate Students
Credit for guided individual study courses may, with department approval, be applied toward an advanced degree but will not help fulfill residence requirements (subsections 3-801 (c)(1) and (c)(2)).
